Prof. Aftab Ahmad has extensive experience in managing complicated and uncontrolled diabetes cases both in the UK and in the UAE, while making the management simple and inclusive of all patients requirements.
With a doctorate in Medicine (MD) degree from University of Liverpool, UK, he has also published numerous original research papers and books in prestigious journals across the world and in 2021 was appointed as a Professor at Khalifa University, Abu Dhabi.
As a Diabetes Strategic Clinical Network Lead and Lead for Advancing Quality for Cheshire and Merseyside, NHS England, he led numerous innovative initiatives including standardisation of practices and comprehensive time bound pathways resulting in significant improvements in patient care, diabetes management and a reduction in complications across the region. The achievements resulted in his nomination for the North West Leadership award.
As a committed educator and Sub-Dean for medical undergraduates at University of Liverpool he was involved in developing and implementing innovative teaching programs. He has also helped guide more than 150 overseas doctors in the UK to illustrious careers as consultants and general practitioners over the last 20 years. He continues to lead and develop various education programs at ICLDC including a diabetes teaching program for clinical staff at ICLDC and Mubadala, and UAE University students and faculty.
He joined ICLDC in 2018 where he successfully developed, designed and implemented a clinical audit department. In 2020, he played a key role in the launch and management of the COVID-19 task force to support the successful implementation of processes and safety measures within ICLDC during the corona virus pandemic.

Dr Chioma Izzi-Engbeaya is a Clinical Academic in the Section of Endocrinology and Investigative Medicine and a Consultant Endocrinologist at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust. Her research and clinical interests include assessing the hormonal interactions between metabolic and reproductive systems, as well as investigating the management of obesity and obesity-related co-morbidities. Dr Izzi-Engbeaya completed her undergraduate medical training at Guy’s Kings and St Thomas’ Medical School in 2004. During this time she also completed an Intercalated BSc in Endocrinology. She became an NIHR Academic Clinical Fellow during her training as a Diabetes and Endocrinology Registrar and was subsequently awarded a 1-year Imperial Health Charity Fellowship, followed by an MRC Clinical Research Training PhD Fellowship in 2014. She completed her PhD (investigating the neuroendocrine control of metabolism and reproduction) with Professor Waljit Dhillo and Dr James Gardiner in 2018. In 2019, she was awarded an Imperial College-BRC funded IPPRF Clinical Research Fellowship, during which she investigated the impact of reproductive hormones on metabolic conditions. In 2024, she was awarded an NIHR Senior Clinical and Practitioner Research Award, and continues to undertake translational and clinical research.

Professor Karim Meeran did his undergraduate and postgraduate training in London, and then proceeded to an academic career at Imperial College. He is a Fellow both of the Royal College of Physicians and the Royal College of Pathologists. He is the Training Programme Director for Metabolic Medicine and Endocrinology in London and sits on the Education Committee for the European Society of Endocrinology.
He has over 100 peer reviewed articles and has published on Cushing’s syndrome, pituitary diseases, and the replacement of patients with pituitary and adrenal failure with glucocorticoids.
He is running an International study to compare low dose (3mg) prednisolone once daily with hydrocortisone three times daily in the search for a replacement that will avoid the need for emergency treatment of hypoadrenalism. Professor Maha Taysir Barakat is Assistant Minister for Health and Life Sciences in the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs and also serves as the Director General of the Frontline Heroes Office in the UAE.
She is the former Chair of the UNOPS-hosted agency the RBM Partnership to End Malaria, has held the post of Director General of the Health Authority Abu Dhabi 2013-2018, and was Co-Founder, Medical & Research Director and Consultant Endocrinologist at the Imperial College London Diabetes Centre (ICLDC) in Abu Dhabi.
She has served as a member of the Social Development Committee of the Executive Council of the Government of Abu Dhabi, and Board member of several Government of Abu Dhabi-related entities including the Board of Trustees of Khalifa University, the Family Development Foundation, the Abu Dhabi Quality and Conformity Council, and the Statistics Centre Abu Dhabi.
As part of her role within the Health Authority, in addition to the fight against lifestyle-related disease, Professor Barakat has supported several public health eradication campaigns against communicable disease both within the UAE and internationally, including Africa and the Indian subcontinent.

He was a Senior Lecturer at King’s College London prior to taking up a post in the UAE. He is the Founder & Director for the Imperial Diabetes Educator Training (IDET) programme. Dr. Mohammed Sajid Kalathil is a consultant Endocrinologist based at Imperial College London Diabetes center. He trained and worked as consultant Endocrinologist in UK before moving to ICLDC in 2018. Dr Suliman received her specialist clinical and research training at the world-renowned Oxford Centre for Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolism, culminating in a DPhil (PhD) from Oxford University on the genetics and physiology of regional adipose deposition and insulin resistance. Her career has been shaped by her interest in genetic endocrine disorders (particularly in diabetes and obesity), physiology, insulin resistance and obesity. She has been a Consultant Endocrinologist, Diabetologist and Obesity Physician at Imperial College London Diabetes Centre, Abu Dhabi since 2012 where she currently leads the Genetics and Obesity services. She is a subject matter expert for the Department of Health (DOH) and Abu Dhabi Public Health Centre (ADPHC) for Diabetes, and Obesity. She is also the director of the DOH upskilling course on obesity management, with over 500 physicians trained to date.
She has set up and leads the Genetics of Diabetes, Obesity and Endocrine disorders clinic since 2014, providing a unique clinical service (in the UAE and MENA region) for patients with monogenic disorders including precision diagnosis, therapeutics (and personalised/targeted treatments), and prognosis; as well as early detection of affected family members through genetic testing and genetic counselling. Dr Suliman is an organising committee member of the NIDDK/NIH coordinated global coalition for heterogeneity of diabetes and precision medicine.
She also leads the multidisciplinary obesity-trained team provides the whole spectrum of obesity management, ranging from dietary and lifestyle interventions, to medication, to pre, peri and
post- metabolic bariatric surgery care, which is an European Association for the Study of Obesity (EASO) collaborating centre.
Dr Suliman is the elected Chairperson of the MENA obesity working group, and the first president of the soon to be launched Middle East and North Africa (MENA) obesity society. Dr Suliman has co-chaired the UAE Obesity conference since inception (2018), and helped develop it into the main regional conference for obesity. She is a co-founder and member of a Global Obesity Management Taskforce, set up to author joint World Obesity Federation and International Federation for Surgery of Obesity and Metabolic disorders (IFSO) evidence-based, comprehensive global obesity management guidelines to cater for countries with high, middle or low income, due to be published Dec 2025.
Dr Suliman has authored several papers, and presented her research at major international conferences. She contributed to the Oxford Handbook for Diabetes and Endocrinology and is a reviewer for leading medical journals. She co-authored the UAE guidelines for T2DM management (2020, being updated in 2025) commissioned by the Emirates Diabetes and Endocrinology Society; and the GCC and Lebanon obesity guidelines (2022), commissioned by the World Obesity Federation.

In 2003, Dr. Tomader started her journey in the field of diabetes investigating effects on nitrates on angina in diabetes models. She then transitioned to industry in 2004, working in Genetic Rare Diseases managing UK patients with Gaucher’s and Fabry’s disease at Genzyme Therapeutics (Sanofi) in her hometown of Oxford. Tomader completed her specialized Master of Research (MRes) program in 2006 focusing on the differential detrimental effects of saturated and unsaturated fatty acids in Type 2 Diabetes, while also being a recipient of the EU Exchange Program in Sweden working on the molecular genetics of Acute Myeloid Leukaemia (AML). In 2007, Tomader was awarded a Diabetes UK PhD Scholarship delineating cellular and drug responses pathway in diabetes drugs (metformin, rosiglitazone and pioglitazone) via cell culture, gene expression and functional work, vector virus design and imaging, later expanding into primary cell line, stem cell differentiation, and pancreatic cancer models.
Receiving an NIH Fellowship in the United States in 2011 at the Comprehensive Diabetes Centre at UAB, Dr Tomader worked and published on lipids and pancreatic beta-cell apoptosis mechanisms in T1DM (cell, animal and human islets) and R&D/new drug pharmacological characterization while managing projects, grants, teaching, mentoring and running specialized facilities such as animal surgery and radioactivity laboratories. Following being an Executive Member of various educational activities (under- and postgraduate), and public health outreach programs, Dr. Tomader became Head of The Office of Undergraduate Research. Her NSF training at the Center for the Integration of Research, Teaching, and Learning (CIRTL) enabled the creation of multiple education and training programs, and initiatives such as the first chapter of the American Physiological Society (APS) in the state of Alabama.
Leaving the USA, in 2015 Dr Tomader was invited to join the educational reform movement in the UAE as Assistant Professor at Sheikha Fatima College of Health Sciences; AD, AA and Adjunct Faculty at Monash University. She taught the Australian Integrated Clinical Therapeutics curriculum at the Dept. of Pharmacy in Cardiology, Oncology and Immunology as well as Public Health and Communication in Health Care. Upon joining the Research Institute at ICLDC, as a Fellow and Project Lead in the Clinical Research Team, and as Organizer and Core Faculty of IDET, Dr Tomader worked with multiple departments integrating research, education and strategic planning. She is currently an accredited Certified Professional by the Association of Clinical Research Professionals.Over the years Dr. Tomader served on various internal and external boards and committees, forging strong relationships with governing, accreditation and stakeholder bodies.
