ETS Scientific Meeting Allergy & Clinical Immunology
The Emirates Thoracic Society (ETS) Scientific Meeting on Allergy & Clinical Immunology, under the sponsorship of Sanofi Genzyme and managed by Medetarian Conferences Organizing (MCO), was held on Wednesday, March 31, 2021, as a live webinar with 238 participating delegates from all over the world, bearing as well with a 2.25 Continuing Medical Education (CME) approved by the Department of Health Abu Dhabi.
Webinar Chairman Prof. Mohamed Abuzakouk, President of the Allergy And Clinical Immunity Group at the Emirates Thoracic Society (ETS), Staff Physician, Allergy & Immunology, Respiratory Institute at the Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, UAE has officially welcomed the delegates in the virtual meeting, “On behalf of the Emirates Thoracic Society and the President Dr. Ashraf Alzaabi, and the Allergy Group, I would like to thank you and welcome you in our meeting. We have three excellent speakers who are going to talk about different aspects of the immune system from heart core immunology to allergy to pathogenesis of airway diseases and we’re looking forward to hearing them talk.”
Dr. Fulvio Salvo, Staff Physician, Allergy & Immunology, Respiratory Institute at the Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, UAE has sufficiently discussed the most important topic on COVID-19 Vaccine Immunology in which he argued that vaccination has greatly reduced the burden of infectious diseases and most significantly is that in essence, we purged the spread of virus once we are vaccinated. He adds, “Lesson learned from other Coronaviruses shows that a waning of Ab titers in common coronaviruses is the rule and reinfection is the rule. On the other hand infection with SARS and MERS-CoV induces a much longer antibody response, in particular in case of clinically relevant disease.” He also cited whichever vaccines are available in the market can help to protect us from getting infected.
Dr. Hamad Alhameli, Staff Physician, Allergy & Immunology, Respiratory Institute at the Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, UAE has delivered an interactive sort-of argument through a polling question on the subject of Allergy or Not Allergy? In his first lecture on food allergy with a clinical case examined and discussed, Dr. Hamad asked the delegates to provide an answer in which 80% out of 64 has voted Allergy whereas 20% voted it is Not Allergy. The polling continues as he unfolds the case on the subject of the skin prick test in which 72% says it’s Allergy while 28% says it is not Allergy. The polling question concluded on the third case presented for a patient with atopic dermatitis in which 69% voted it’s Allergy and 31% says it is Not Allergy.
The Sanofi Genzyme symposium kicked off as Prof. Mohamed Abuzakouk opened the virtual podium for Dr. Stuart Carr, Allergist & Clinical Immunologist, Canada, CMO at the Snö Asthma & Allergy, Abu Dhabi, UAE on his lecture on A Focus on Type 2 Inflammation in Asthma. Dr. Stuart Carr in his learning objectives has aimed to review the roles of epithelial barrier dysfunction, eosinophilic inflammation, and allergic inflammation in amplifying and perpetuating Type 2 disease1-3 and provide scientific discussion on the frequently coexisting nature of diseases driven by Type 2 inflammation. He cited a case of a 45-year-old male patient with allergic rhinitis and nasal polyps in which by medical definition epithelial barriers predisposed to Type 2 allergic disease are characterized by increased permeability and aberrant behavior of morphogenetic programs that maintain epithelial homeostasis. He adds, “
Results from a study of 79 patients with asthma from Canada (aged between 18 – 60 years) showed that patients with asthma and nasal polyposis demonstrated statistically significant differences in clinical characteristics compared with patients with asthma without nasal polyposis.”
The final Question and Answer session was moderated by Prof. Mohamed Abuzakouk and followed by a closing remark to wrap up the Emirates Thoracic Society (ETS) Scientific Meeting on Allergy and Clinical Immunology live webinar.
