Prof. Abdu Adem

Dr. Abdu Adem received his Ph.D from Uppsala University (Sweden) in Pharmacology in 1987. Following a postdoctoral training at the Institute Pasteur (Paris, France), CNRS (France) and Karolinska Institute (Stockholm, Sweden) Prof. Adem accepted a postdoctoral position at the Karolinska Institute, Sweden. In 1991, while still at the Karolinska Institute, he received his Docent title (Habilitation).
In 1999 he was recruited from the Karolinska Institute to join the College of Medicine and Health Sciences at United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) in Al Ain as a full Professor. In 2020 Prof. Adem joined the College of Medicine, Khalifa University, in Abu Dhabi
Prof. Adem’s long-term goal has been to develop a vigorous functional neuroscience research, education, and training program. The main focus of his research has been neurodegeneration and neurodegenerative disorders like Alzheimer's disease.
Another aspect of his research has been towards understanding the biology of diabetes and its complications especially in the light that 24-28% of the United Arab Emirates population suffers from diabetes.
Prof. Adem has published over 245 manuscripts (Citations Scopus: 5255, H-index: 40 ). Most of his work is published in top ranking journals of his field.
Prof. Adem and his team have patented two groups of novel anti-cancer compounds and three new anti-diabetic compounds as potential new drugs and has two new pending anti-diabetic patents.
Prof. Adem has been very successful in securing both intramural and extramural grant support from various funding agencies including the European Union, Michael J. Fox Foundation, Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Grant Award, College of Medicine UAEU, United Arab Emirates University, Khalifa University.
Prof. Adem has been very instrumental in supervising several graduate (17 Ph.D and 4 Masters) and undergraduate (more than 150) students. Prof. Adem also serves on the the Editorial Board of a number of journals and works as an ad hoc reviewer for several international journals.
Prof. Adem has received several research awards from UAEU as well as from Sheikh Hamdan Award for Medical Sciences.
Prof. Adem was nominated for Mohamed Bin Rashid Medal of Scientific Distinguishment and was short listed by the American Academy of Sciences as one of the top scientists in the United Arab Emirates. He was awarded the Golden visa (10 years visa) by the Prime Minister, His Highness Sheikh Mohamed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum.
Prof. Adem is a member of Mohamed Bin Rashid Academy of Scientists (MBRAS).

Dr. Ibrahim is clinical assistant professor and American trained board-certified consultant Neurocognitive Geriatrician at Neurological institute at clinic Abu Dhabi Prior to joining Cleveland Clinic, she was working in the US as consultant Neuroconitive geriatrician and clinical professor at Rochester Regional Health Geriatric on Geriatric Consult service with busy Dementia &delirium consult practice with diverse aging brain related memory disorders,delirium, dementia and Geriatric Polypharmacy

Dr. Ibrahim is trained at Cleveland Clinic Ohio main campus in the US under tutelage of Dr. Robert Palmer, concept originator of acute care for elderly (ACE) unit, which is now an international recognized model of hospital care for geriatric syndromes. She is a Pioneer in the field of geriatric care in UAE, having implemented the first delirium mobile acute care for elderly (MACE) program) of its kind in the region.
Dr. Ibrahim has more than 25-year extensive experience in aging brain. She conducted more than 2000 Neurocognitive batteries and was proactive in implementing the first EMR based cognitive and functional screening tools in the UAE to preemptively detect and treat memory disorders at earlier stages

Being an academic lead Physician at the geriatric fellowship steering committee, in NY, she helped kicking off the first Geriatric fellowship program and devised didactic curriculum for Neurocognitive disorders and delirium. Marwan Sabbagh, MD, is a behavioral neurologist in the Alzheimer’s and Memory Disorders Program and a professor in the Department of Neurology at Barrow Neurological Institute. He is board certified in neurology by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.
Dr. Sabbagh’s expertise includes the diagnosis and treatment of Alzheimer’s disease and other memory disorders. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Neurology.
Dr. Sabbagh earned his medical degree from the University of Arizona College of Medicine in Tucson and his undergraduate degree from the University of California—Berkeley. He completed his neurology residency at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas, and a geriatric neurology and dementia fellowship at the University of California San Diego School of Medicine.

Dr. Sabbagh is a leading investigator of many prominent national Alzheimer’s prevention and treatment clinical trials. He serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease and Alzheimer’s and Dementia: Translational Research & Clinical Interventions. He is the editor-in-chief of Neurology and Therapy. Dr. Sabbagh is a prolific author who has written and edited books on Alzheimer’s disease and has contributed to hundreds of medical and scientific articles.

Prof. Robert P. Friedland

Dr Friedland is a clinical and research neurologist devoted to the study of brain disorders associated with aging. He is a graduate of the City College of New York and graduated received his MD degree from the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York in 1973. He completed his neurology residency at the Mount Sinai Hospital and was a fellow in dementia and aging at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, NY with Robert Katzman. He then worked at the University of California, Davis, and in the Research Medicine Group of the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory of the University California, Berkeley where he served as Chief Neurologist. From 1985 to 1990 he was Deputy Clinical Director and Chief of the Section on Brain Aging and Dementia of the National Institute on Aging, National Institutes of Health of Bethesda, MD. At the CWRU School of Medicine he was Professor of Neurology, Radiology and Psychiatry and Chief of the Laboratory of Neurogeriatrics from 1990 to 2008. In December of 2008 he joined the faculty of the University of Louisville, as the Rudd Professor and Chair of the Dept. of Neurology.

Dr. Friedland’s work has focused on clinical and biological issues in Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders. Dr. Friedland has authored or coauthored over 220 scientific publications in referred journals and has received research funding from the National Institutes of Health as well as several foundations, institutes, corporations, and families. He received over $1M annual research funding to support his work from 1985-2013. He is currently on sabbatical leave in Kyoto Japan as a Long-Term Invitational Fellow, supported by a grant from the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science. He is working with collaborators at the Kyoto Prefectural University of Medicine and the Kyoto Institute of Technology on the influence of the microbiota on the development of neurodegeneration in transgenic Drosophila.

Prof. Suhail Alrukn

Dr. Alrukn received his degree in medicine from UAE university. He underwent his neurology residency at the University of McGill, and subsequently obtain the neurology certification from the Royal Collage of Physicians & Surgeon (Canada). He then completed a fellowship in Cerebrovascular disease and Stroke at Montreal General Hospital, Canada. he currently serves as a head of Stroke Center at Rashid Hospital, Dubai.

Dr. Alrukn’ s field of interest are principally directed towards the acute stroke management, stroke unit establishing and post stroke rehabilitation. He established the 1st certified stroke unit in UAE. Dr. Al rukn is a local and international speaker in stroke field, and had many publications in this area. Currently he is the President of MENA Stroke Organization.

In 2019, Dr. Alrukn became the President of World Congress of Neurology, and is the currently the President of Emirates Neurology Society.
Dr. Alrukn is the Founder and the chairman of the Neurology Residency Program in Dubai, since 2013. Also, he is the Chairman of the Dubai Scientific & Research Ethical Committee.
Dr. Alrukn has an interest in Headache management & Movement disorders, and he is running the movement disorder clinic at Rashid hospital.
