Prof. Abdu Adem

Dr. Abdu Adem received his Ph.D from Uppsala University (Sweden) in Pharmacology in 1987. Following a postdoctoral training at the Institute Pasteur (Paris, France), CNRS (France) and Karolinska Institute (Stockholm, Sweden) Prof. Adem accepted a postdoctoral position at the Karolinska Institute, Sweden. In 1991, while still at the Karolinska Institute, he received his Docent title (Habilitation).
In 1999 he was recruited from the Karolinska Institute to join the College of Medicine and Health Sciences at United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) in Al Ain as a full Professor. In 2020 Prof. Adem joined the College of Medicine, Khalifa University, in Abu Dhabi
Prof. Adem’s long-term goal has been to develop a vigorous functional neuroscience research, education, and training program. The main focus of his research has been neurodegeneration and neurodegenerative disorders like Alzheimer's disease.
Another aspect of his research has been towards understanding the biology of diabetes and its complications especially in the light that 24-28% of the United Arab Emirates population suffers from diabetes.
Prof. Adem has published over 245 manuscripts (Citations Scopus: 5255, H-index: 40 ). Most of his work is published in top ranking journals of his field.
Prof. Adem and his team have patented two groups of novel anti-cancer compounds and three new anti-diabetic compounds as potential new drugs and has two new pending anti-diabetic patents.
Prof. Adem has been very successful in securing both intramural and extramural grant support from various funding agencies including the European Union, Michael J. Fox Foundation, Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Grant Award, College of Medicine UAEU, United Arab Emirates University, Khalifa University.
Prof. Adem has been very instrumental in supervising several graduate (17 Ph.D and 4 Masters) and undergraduate (more than 150) students. Prof. Adem also serves on the the Editorial Board of a number of journals and works as an ad hoc reviewer for several international journals.
Prof. Adem has received several research awards from UAEU as well as from Sheikh Hamdan Award for Medical Sciences.
Prof. Adem was nominated for Mohamed Bin Rashid Medal of Scientific Distinguishment and was short listed by the American Academy of Sciences as one of the top scientists in the United Arab Emirates. He was awarded the Golden visa (10 years visa) by the Prime Minister, His Highness Sheikh Mohamed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum.
Prof. Adem is a member of Mohamed Bin Rashid Academy of Scientists (MBRAS).

Dr. Abdullah Al Salti graduated from Sultan Qaboos University in 2002. He obtained membership of royal college of physician MRCP UK in 2006 and completed his neurology residency program at McGill University from 2008-2013. He has obtained his FRCPC in neurology in 2013 and has completed Fellowship in Neuromuscular and EMG at McGill university in 2014. Dr. Al Salti is a member of the Canadian Society of Clinical Neurophysiology (CSCN in EMG) since 2014 and at present he is working as a senior consultant neurologist neuromuscular & EMG specialist. He is also a member of the scientific education committee internal medicine program Oman Medical Specialty Board (OMSB) and head of neurology department at Neuroscience Center at Khoula Hospital Muscat.

Dr. Ibrahim is trained at Cleveland Clinic Ohio main campus in the US under tutelage of Dr. Robert Palmer, concept originator of acute care for elderly (ACE) unit, which is now an international recognized model of hospital care for geriatric syndromes. She is a Pioneer in the field of geriatric care in UAE, having implemented the first delirium mobile acute care for elderly (MACE) program) of its kind in the region.
Dr. Ibrahim has more than 25-year extensive experience in aging brain. She conducted more than 2000 Neurocognitive batteries and was proactive in implementing the first EMR based cognitive and functional screening tools in the UAE to preemptively detect and treat memory disorders at earlier stages

Being an academic lead Physician at the geriatric fellowship steering committee, in NY, she helped kicking off the first Geriatric fellowship program and devised didactic curriculum for Neurocognitive disorders and delirium. Prof. Jasem Al-Hashel

Dr. Al-Hashel is an adult neurologist and Headache specialist. He is a graduate of the college of medicine, Kuwait University, Kuwait.
Dr. Al-Hashel completed his neurology residency as well as his fellowship in headache and Botulinum toxin injection at McGill University, Canada.
Dr. Al-Hashel is board certified from the Royal college of Physicians and Surgeon of Canada (FRCPC) and had also American fellowship in Headache Medicine (FAHS) and Canadian fellowship in Headache Medicine from McGill University.
He is a Consultant Neurologist and Professor of Neurology at Kuwait University, faculty of medicine in Kuwait. He established the headache and the Botulinum toxin clinic in Ibn Sina and Mubarak Al-Kabeer Hospitals in Kuwait.
Dr. Al-Hashel also the Chair of the faculty of Neurology in Kuwait and the President of Kuwait Neurological Society and the Vice President of Pan Arab Union of Neuroscience (PAUNS).
Dr. Al-Hashel has more than 100 publications in the field of Neurology and author a chapter in chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) in International neurology book, Second edition.
Dr. Al-Hashel was awarded as best researcher in Kuwait University in 2015.
Dr. Al-Hashel was awarded by H.H the Amer of Kuwait Sheikh Sabah for scientific achievements in Medical Sciences and Allied Health Sciences 2019.

Dr. Laila Abdel Wareth, is a physician executive. She is currently the Chief Executive Officer at the National Reference Laboratory, the Medical Director of Imperial College Diabetes Center Laboratories, previous Chair of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine Institute at the Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, Adjunct Clinical Professor, Department of Pathology, College of Medicine & Health Sciences at Khalifa University. Dr Laila also holds a position also as the President of The Emirates Clinical Chemistry Society under Emirates Medical Association in the UAE. Prior to joining the National Reference Laboratory, Dr. Abdel Wareth served as Chief Medical Officer of SEHA Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Services and Chair of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Institute at Sheikh Khalifa Medical City. She brings more than twenty-eight years of experience in healthcare, also including roles at British Columbia Children’s & Women’s Hospital in Vancouver, Canada and Mafraq Hospital, Abu Dhabi, UAE. Dr. Abdel Wareth earned her medical degree from Ain Shams University Cairo, Egypt and completed her postgraduate training at the University of British Columbia, Canada, in the specialty of Medical Biochemistry and Clinical Pathology. She obtained Canadian and American Boards accreditation in Medical Biochemistry and Clinical Pathology and is a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons in Canada, the College of American Pathologists. In addition to her clinical degrees, Dr. Abdel Wareth has an Executive Master’s Degree in Healthcare Administration from Zayed University, UAE. She is an active member in various scientific societies and has several publications to her credit in the field of Laboratory Medicine.

Dr. Dogar is a staff physician and section head of neuroradiology at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi. He graduated from King Edward Medical University, Lahore, Pakistan. He completed his radiology residency training and neuroradiology fellowship at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City, Iowa, USA.

Prior to joining Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, Dr Dogar held role as neuroradiologist at St. Cloud Hospital Minnesota, King Faisal Hospital and Research Center Riyadh and Visiting Consultant neuroradiologist at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. He has expertise in head and neck imaging, spineimaging and neuroradiology.

Prof. Mohamed Seghier has over 20 years of experience in brain mapping and cognitive neuroscience. His work revolves around the use of neuroimaging techniques to study brain function in individuals with neurological and mental deficits. He holds a PhD in brain mapping with functional MRI from Joseph Fourier University (France) and has worked at Geneva University Hospitals (Switzerland) and the Wellcome Centre for Human Neuroimaging at UCL (UK). Since 2021, he has been at the Biomedical Engineering Department at Khalifa University (UAE). He serves as Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Imaging Systems and Technology (published by Wiley) and Handling Editor at Imaging Neuroscience (published by MIT).

Dr. Ellahham is an avid researcher; his research includes acute coronary syndromes, dyslipidemia, accreditation, quality, artificial intelligence, telehealth, blockchain and metaverse. He is a recognized world-leader in these fields.

Dr. Alrukn received his degree in medicine from UAE university. He underwent his neurology residency at the University of McGill, and subsequently obtain the neurology certification from the Royal Collage of Physicians & Surgeon (Canada). He then completed a fellowship in Cerebrovascular disease and Stroke at Montreal General Hospital, Canada. he currently serves as a head of Stroke Center at Rashid Hospital, Dubai.

Dr. Alrukn’ s field of interest are principally directed towards the acute stroke management, stroke unit establishing and post stroke rehabilitation. He established the 1st certified stroke unit in UAE. Dr. Al rukn is a local and international speaker in stroke field, and had many publications in this area. Currently he is the President of MENA Stroke Organization.

In 2019, Dr. Alrukn became the President of World Congress of Neurology, and is the currently the President of Emirates Neurology Society.
Dr. Alrukn is the Founder and the chairman of the Neurology Residency Program in Dubai, since 2013. Also, he is the Chairman of the Dubai Scientific & Research Ethical Committee.
Dr. Alrukn has an interest in Headache management & Movement disorders, and he is running the movement disorder clinic at Rashid hospital. He currently sits on the executive boards of various scientific associations, steering committee and advisory boards, mainly in stroke & headache. Dr. Friedland’s work has focused on clinical and biological issues in Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders. Dr. Friedland has authored or coauthored over 220 scientific publications in referred journals and has received research funding from the National Institutes of Health as well as several foundations, institutes, corporations, and families. He received over $1M annual research funding to support his work from 1985-2013. He is currently on sabbatical leave in Kyoto Japan as a Long-Term Invitational Fellow, supported by a grant from the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science. He is working with collaborators at the Kyoto Prefectural University of Medicine and the Kyoto Institute of Technology on the influence of the microbiota on the development of neurodegeneration in transgenic Drosophila.
