Dr. Abdu Adem received his Ph.D from Uppsala University (Sweden) in Pharmacology in 1987. Following a postdoctoral training at the Institute Pasteur (Paris, France), CNRS (France) and Karolinska Institute (Stockholm, Sweden) Prof. Adem accepted a postdoctoral position at the Karolinska Institute, Sweden. In 1991, while still at the Karolinska Institute, he received his Docent title (Habilitation).
In 1999 he was recruited from the Karolinska Institute to join the College of Medicine and Health Sciences at United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) in Al Ain as a full Professor. In 2020 Prof. Adem joined the College of Medicine, Khalifa University, in Abu Dhabi
Prof. Adem’s long-term goal has been to develop a vigorous functional neuroscience research, education, and training program. The main focus of his research has been neurodegeneration and neurodegenerative disorders like Alzheimer's disease.
Another aspect of his research has been towards understanding the biology of diabetes and its complications especially in the light that 24-28% of the United Arab Emirates population suffers from diabetes.
Prof. Adem has published over 245 manuscripts (Citations Scopus: 5255, H-index: 40 ). Most of his work is published in top ranking journals of his field.
Prof. Adem and his team have patented two groups of novel anti-cancer compounds and three new anti-diabetic compounds as potential new drugs and has two new pending anti-diabetic patents.
Prof. Adem has been very successful in securing both intramural and extramural grant support from various funding agencies including the European Union, Michael J. Fox Foundation, Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Grant Award, College of Medicine UAEU, United Arab Emirates University, Khalifa University.
Prof. Adem has been very instrumental in supervising several graduate (17 Ph.D and 4 Masters) and undergraduate (more than 150) students. Prof. Adem also serves on the the Editorial Board of a number of journals and works as an ad hoc reviewer for several international journals.
Prof. Adem has received several research awards from UAEU as well as from Sheikh Hamdan Award for Medical Sciences.
Prof. Adem was nominated for Mohamed Bin Rashid Medal of Scientific Distinguishment and was short listed by the American Academy of Sciences as one of the top scientists in the United Arab Emirates. He was awarded the Golden visa (10 years visa) by the Prime Minister, His Highness Sheikh Mohamed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum.

She is a Pioneer in the field of geriatric care in UAE, having implemented the first delirium mobile acute care for elderly (MACE) program) of its kind in the region.

Hans Frykman MD Ph.D. FRCPC is the founder, CEO, and medical director of BC Neuroimmunology Lab located in the UBC hospital on the University of BC campus in Vancouver BC. He is the medical director for Lykke Lab a genetics laboratory also on the University of BC campus. Also, he is the CSO for Neurocode Lab Inc. in Bellingham WA, a high-complexity, specialty lab focused on neuroimmunology and biomarkers in neurodegeneration. Dr. Frykman has a clinical faculty position at the University of British Columbia, Faculty of Medicine, Division of Neurology. Since January 1, 2025 Dr. Frykman is also the director for the Center of Excellence in Neurochemistry at National Reference Lab, Abu Dhabi. Dr. Frykman has a PhD in biocatalysis and chemistry from the Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm. After completing medical school at Karolinska Institute, he trained in internal medicine and oncology at Karolinska Hospital (Solna Campus) followed by training in medical biochemistry at the University of BC with a focus on clinical chemistry and clinical laboratory immunology. Training in clinical laboratory neuroimmunology was obtained by training on location at JR hospital in Oxford (Drs. He completed his residency and Fellowships in Specialist Radiology Training at Manchester with PET-CT fellowship at the University Hospital Zurich in Switzerland. Dr. Alrukn received his degree in medicine from UAE university. He then completed a fellowship in Cerebrovascular disease and Stroke at Montreal General Hospital, Canada. he currently serves as a head of Stroke Center at Rashid Hospital, Dubai.

Dr. Alrukn’ s field of interest are principally directed towards the acute stroke management, stroke unit establishing and post stroke rehabilitation. He established the 1st certified stroke unit in UAE. Dr. Al rukn is a local and international speaker in stroke field, and had many publications in this area. Currently he is the President of MENA Stroke Organization.

In 2019, Dr. Alrukn became the President of World Congress of Neurology, and is the currently the President of Emirates Neurology Society.
Dr. Alrukn is the Founder and the chairman of the Neurology Residency Program in Dubai, since 2013. Also, he is the Chairman of the Dubai Scientific & Research Ethical Committee.
Dr. Alrukn has an interest in Headache management & Movement disorders, and he is running the movement disorder clinic at Rashid hospital. He currently sits on the executive boards of various scientific associations, steering committee and advisory boards, mainly in stroke & headache. Dr. Friedland’s work has focused on clinical and biological issues in Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders. Dr. Friedland has authored or coauthored over 220 scientific publications in referred journals and has received research funding from the National Institutes of Health as well as several foundations, institutes, corporations, and families. He received over $1M annual research funding to support his work from 1985-2013. He is currently on sabbatical leave in Kyoto Japan as a Long-Term Invitational Fellow, supported by a grant from the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science.
