Dr. Buckley was educated at Oxford University and the Royal Free Hospital in the UK and holds degrees from Oxford, University College London and Imperial College London. Dr. Buckley completed his PhD while working as a Research Doctor at ICLDC between 2014 and 2017. During this time his areas of interest were the interactions between gut hormones and complications of Diabetes, local causes of vitamin D deficiency and its impact on bone and cardiovascular health, genetic lipid disorders, early detection of type 1 diabetes, fatty liver disease, and the effects of diet on blood glucose control. Dr. Mai Al Jaber is the Chief Executive Officer for Imperial College London Diabetes Centre (ICLDC). In this capacity, she works to optimize operations and enhance patient access and experience across all ICLDC branches. She also leads efforts to expand ICLDC’s footprint within the UAE and the region.
Dr. Mai has practiced General Medicine in Abu Dhabi for over 17 years. In 2005, she began her career in healthcare as a General Practitioner at Zayed Military Hospital (ZMH).
Her passion for public health helped her obtain a Master of Public Health and Leadership from the Bloomberg School of Public Health at Johns Hopkins University in the United States in 2012.
Dr. Mai joined Healthpoint in 2013 as a specialist in public health medicine. She worked in the Department of Family Medicine, where she implemented programs for preventative screening. In 2016, she was appointed Medical Director of Healthpoint, where she was responsible for overseeing critical parts of clinical leadership and operations to ensure the successful execution of Healthpoint’s vision and the delivery of high-quality, patient-centered care.
Dr. Mai continues to be a community leader by serving on multiple health and sports committees. She is currently the President of National Antidoping Agency of the United Arab Emirates.

Dr. Mohammad Mustafa Khan, is the Medical Director of Imperial College London Diabetes Centre (ICLDC). Dr. Khan plays an important role in supporting ICLDC’s clinical team to deliver exceptional care while ensuring that ICLDC remains the gold-standard facility for management of diabetes and endocrinology in the region.
With over 15 years of experience in the specialty, Dr. Khan previously worked as a Senior Consultant in Diabetes and Endocrinology in the United Kingdom where he was also the clinical lead for insulin pump and transition diabetes services. He has wide and varied experience in the field of endocrinology with specialist expertise in insulin pump therapy, thyroid and pituitary disorders and in advanced diabetes technologies including hybrid closed loop pumps and managing complex diabetes. Dr. Khan has several qualifications including a MSc from Cardiff University and a postgraduate award from Warwick University, United Kingdom. He also received his higher specialist training in endocrinology in the East of England region which included working at the prestigious Institute of Metabolic Sciences at Addenbrookes Hospital in Cambridge.

Dr. Victoria Salem is a clinician scientist and diabetologist at Imperial College London. She runs a technology driven clinic for type 1 diabetes at St Mary’s Hospital. During the first part of her research career she gained extensive experience on appetite and glucose regulation in human physiological studies and using fMRI. She went on to establish selective deafferentation techniques in rodents and glucose clamping in unrestrained mice to unravel mechanistic pathways along the gut-brain axis with respect to sugar and body weight regulation. She now has a laboratory in the Department of Bioengineering at Imperial, where she has developed state-of-the art longitudinal functional imaging (laser confocal microscopy), microfluidic and vascularised chip-based systems and network theory to understand the islet of Langerhans as a functional unit. This work has now catapulted her into the field of regenerative medicine for diabetes – as recipient of a SMF DUK Grand Challenge fellowship she is leading a UK wide team of material scientists, stem cell and islet biologists towards a cell-based cure for T1D.
