The 2nd Orthopedic Update Webinar under the sponsorship of Propharma, a pioneer in pharmaceutical distribution services in the UAE, was held on Saturday, April 10, 2021, with 420 global participants aiming to earn the 1.5 CME hours approved by the Department of Health Abu Dhabi and managed by Medetarian Conferences Organizing (MCO), the leading healthcare events company across the United Arab Emirates.
Dr. Oussama Chaar, Consultant Hip and Knee Surgeon, Head of Orthopaedic Department at the Burjeel Hospital, UAE has discussed the topic on The Use of Bone Graft in THR in which he cited radiological analysis surrounding bone loss and the classifications of bone graft. He argued the use of bone graft as part of the reconstruction goals to reestablish the lateral offset and the center of rotation. He adds, “The hip cannot have a normal function if you place your new implant in the migrated place and much as possible to place the new implants in the anatomic position.”
Further, he elaborated the process by providing intricate details on how to perform the grafting in which he addressed that the medium to long term results depends on the biological interaction between the graft and the host bone. Thus, he revealed the techniques such as compact bone grafting with morsalized bone, partial allograft, total allograft (frozen bone graft), and the trabecular metal augments and reviewed each operation ad-hoc to his preferred practices.
Dr. Mostafa Azab, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology Shoulder & Upper Limb at the Burjeel Orthopedic & Sports Medicine Centre, UAE has shared his comprehensive reviews on the topic of Common Shoulder injuries in Athletics in which in his introduction he said that shoulder injuries are extremely painful, and drastically restricts the freedom of movement and function. He also stressed that these injuries can occur in one of 2 ways such as acute injuries related to a traumatic event and Chronic injury related to a chronic repetitive overload of lifting or throwing (repetitive microtrauma).
On acute injuries he explained, “We can have the chronic form of trauma that will cause or present with shoulder pain that needs to be dealt with as is.” He also explained Chronic Repetitive Microtrauma in which as he pointed out that some sports require high shoulder speed and accelerations, which need good stabilization by the joint capsule, ligaments, surrounding muscles, and tendons. Chronic repetition of such activities for months and years can lead to degenerative types of injuries to the joint soft tissue structures.
Dr. Mohamad Louay Jabban, Consultant Upper Limb and Sports Orthopaedic Surgeon at the Burjeel Hospital, UAE has discussed philosophically the subject related to Office Syndrome. He complimented the lecture by sharing the wisdom of lubrication by a known yoga master Jaggi Vasudev, known publicly as Sadhguru:
“People on the path of yoga spent a lifetime learning how to sit. Logically thinking, a person cannot understand why should somebody spend a lifetime learning how to sit?! Health. You’re talking about health. There are other dimensions to it but coming to health. If you have to be healthy, you have to be at ease. A good car, it’s a wonderful machine but drive it without the engine wane. In ten minutes it will be junked. Because there is no ease. Lubrication is lost. So when you say you’re stressed, you’re anxious, you’re disturbed, by this and that, your lubrication is lost. It is not because of the speed at which you’re traveling you’re struggling, it is because there is no ease. There’s no lubricant inside. All these vital organs in your body they’re not fixed with clamps, and knots, and bolts. They are hanging in nets like this. Only if you sit like this with your spine erect, your organs are at maximum comfort. You are who you are only because of what you have perceived. Perception means you must be like an antenna. The whole system of yoga is just this, you learn to hold your body right.”
Dr. Mohamad Louay Jabban has illuminated us on the misuse of our body, thus, the term office syndrome has been medically coined in which in his presentation it involves the manifestation of headache, shoulder pain, back pain, and neck pain. He said, “All these pains are because we are not using our body properly.”
Using educational creative visuals and infographics bespoke to his lecture, Dr. Jabban was able to capture the essential pointers all related to muscle spasms and the underlying medical explanation to understand the nature of pain. He also argued that if you moved your neck the pain will increase if you have neck and shoulder pain. With his broad analysis on the highlighted subject, he also pointed out the crucial role of stretching exercises against office syndrome and as a word of advice to take a few minutes to relax. That being said, changing our habits especially working in an office must be taken into serious consideration to avoid, nay, protect ourselves from these muscle pains.
