The healthcare system in United Arab Emirates is evolving with time. It is equipped with the latest technologies and modern operative procedures in big medical establishments and hospitals. But if you are an expat in the country then you better understand the problems and major health issues that foreigners often face while adjusting to its climate and atmosphere. UAE is a country where temperatures soar as high and above 50 degree centigrade. While heatstroke, sunburn and dehydration are very common place, it is also not very rare to find respiratory related problems. This is often aggravated by the sand and dust from the nearby desert. Also cities are perpetually growing and are under construction. Due to this, the breathing air is always laden with dust causing different respiratory ailments.
How to Prevent Heatstroke
The only way to prevent heatstroke is not to go out in the sun. Avoid the sun as much as possible. Consuming raw onions in salad helps you beat the heat. When you have no choice other than to brave the sun, make sure you have an umbrella or a hat overhead. Wear clothes and choose colours wisely. White and other light shades refract the sun’s rays rather than absorbing them. Always carry a water bottle wherever you go. When you are at home drink plenty of water, at least 8 glasses a day. Freshly made lemonade keeps you cool throughout the day. Apply the sunscreen evenly on your face and other exposed areas of the skin to prevent sunburns. To avoid respiration problems or if you are prone to them, it is advisable to wear a mask when out.
For health related problems and to seek doctor’s advice you need medical insurance provided by a registered company. This is obviously mandatory for an entry visa. There are many health insurance companies now operating in and around the United Arab Emirates because of the growing influx of expats to the region and the major requirement for healthcare cover. The majority of expats from the west are provided group insurance by their employer.
Until many years swine flu remained a problem as stated by the Ministry of Health. Epidemics can spread within no time. And hence it’s most important to have yourself insured at all times.
